Apple Pie is an easy but delicious bake for all special occasions.  In South Africa, we had quite a few different styles, but there were a few favorites…  We share with you one recipe in English and the other in Afrikaans.  We received the recipe in Afrikaans, and want to share it with you in the same way.   (These days it is easy to translate with Google.)

Saucy Apple Pie Recipe

A quick and easy apple pie recipe for Mother’s day or any special celebration.  Easy enough, even for beginner cooks to make with confidence.  It’s a quick weekend recipe.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup self-raising flour
  • 2 ml baking powder
  • a pinch of salt
  • 60 ml milk
  • 1 small tin (385 g) of tart apples (unsweetened)

Sauce:

  • 250 ml fresh cream
  • 1 cup sugar

Method:

Preheat the oven to 180 °C.

Beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

Add the eggs one at a time.

Sift the flour, baking powder, and salt and add to the mixture.

Mix slightly and add the milk little by little, making sure not to over mix.

Add the batter to a prepared baking dish and place the apples on top.

Bake for 30-40 minutes until light brown and cooked through.

Make tiny holes with a fork all over the tart and pour the sauce over while hot.

The best South African Apple Pie

This recipe is one of our favorites.  It is not quite a pie.  Maybe more cake than pie.  But it is lovely.  They serve it still warm and fresh from the oven, with lots of fresh cream.  Delicious!  In this beautiful country, when you visit someone on a farm, the ‘tannie’ will see it as a compliment when you have seconds.  So, when they offer, you can say ‘yes thank you’ with a smile, and enjoy a second helping.  You can worry about your diet another day.  🙂

Appeltert (meer koek as tert)

  • 200 ml margarien
  • 250 ml suiker
  • 2.5 ml sout
  • 5 ml vanieljegeursel
  • 3 eiers, geklits
  • 500ml bruismeel, ongesif
  • 200 ml melk
  • 1 blik (385 – 410 g) tertappels
  • fyn kaneel
  • kaneelsuiker

Stroop

  • 90 ml suiker
  • 60 ml botter
  • 30 ml suurlemoensap

Voorverhit oond tot op 190 °C.

Klop margarien en suiker tot romerig en voeg sout en geursel by.

Voeg eiers geleidelik by en meng.

Kook stroopbestandele 5 minute lank saam.  Prik kors van die tert met vurk as dit uit die oond kom en giet warm stroop oor.

Sit warm voor met room .

I hope you’ll enjoy these recipes and add them to your recipe book at home.  What I love about these two recipes is that you don’t need to stand around and first peel the apples and then chop them all up, etc…  You just open the can and bake the pie…  🙂

Enjoy my friends !
