It’s not the kind of city that’s in the top ten beautiful destinations in the world. However, it’s picturesque and affordable enough to have you enjoy a relaxing 2-night stay. Combined with hiking, cycling, local exploring, and day trips, it has enough options to fill even a long weekend.

Appingedam (they received city status in 1327) is one of those cities with a small-town feeling. Surprisingly, it is the only other city in the Groningen Province apart from the Groningen city.

Appingedam is most famous for its hanging kitchens

The city is known for its hanging kitchens (Dutch: Hangende Keukens) above the Damsterdiep (previously known as the Delf River).

TRAVEL TIP: By the way, the ideal view is from the bridge at the Gouden Pand. It’s one of my picture-perfect moments. That moment when you think “wow, this is the ultimate…”.

And, if you’re lucky like me, you’ll spot the drawbridge over the Damsterdiep in action, allowing access to the larger boats.

The entire City Centre was declared a Heritage Area. Consequently, it’s a real treat to wander the streets where buildings up to 600 years can be seen. There sure is enough to keep you busy for two days, depending on your likes and dislikes.

This little hidden gem has many surprises, so let’s get into them…
